Well, I think what makes a successful criminal law attorney is a combination of a few things. Preparation; a lot of it has to do with what kind of experience you’ve got and that I include with preparation. I think that if you know a law and you’ve been doing it for awhile that goes a long way in that category. Also, with every case that you have you have to prepare with the facts of the case that you’ve got. You’ve got to be able to put in the time.
The other P I use is people. You have to know the people that you’re dealing with. You’re going to be much more effective if you know the judges, if you know the prosecutors and, even more than anything else, if you know your client and if you know the issues are that your client needs to address, you’re going to be a much more effective attorney.
And the last thing that I think makes an effective attorney in criminal law is perseverance. If you just have one strategy and it’s the only strategy you use and it fails, if you have nothing else to go to, then it’s just not going to be effective. You need to have more ways of getting at the same thing and the goal really is what does your client need to accomplish? |
